Ten reasons not to miss the Shadows Illuminated sneak preview event.

(from practice session videos: "Lost Line" sung raw by Cedar Branches)

1. It is human.

Celebrities dominate the culture of art in American culture. Most performers are in lifestyles of wealth and fame that very few people can actually relate to on any personal level. Such performers have little understanding of what life is like for most people, making many performances little more than an act. There are few performances that are so relatable to the average person as Shadows Illuminated. I seek to masterfully expose my humanity in this performance such that the themes meet people where they are, living with the challenges of every day human life.

2. It is honest.

When you hear, see, and most importantly feel this performance, you will get the authenticity that can come only from personal experience. Shadows Illuminated is dripping with such authenticity. Most performances feature people singing rehearsed material that they can’t even relate to on any authentic level. Shadows Illuminated is pretty much the opposite of this, as I share my own story and my own soul in a way that no other performer possibly could.

3. It is unique.

Given my approach to art, where there are no rules and where there is no single way to express oneself, I break expectations for what music should sound like or for what a visual performance should look like. The result is a show unlike any other in just about every possible way.

4. It may be the only live performance of this material, ever.

Time will tell on this point, but the fact is that it is currently the only scheduled performance. It very well could be the one-and-only chance to see this show. Even if shows are added, none will be in the raw and minimalist form that will be presented at the sneak preview event. Some opportunities just shouldn’t be passed by, and this is one of those. Take an evening to make sure this one isn’t

5. It might just change your life.

This show has a potent magic about it, and there are numerous lessons inherent in the content. At any point, audience members may hit one of those AHA moments, that moment in time where a personal breakthrough happens. There are plenty of really good chances for this as I share this multifaceted piece.

6. Everyone needs to see a grown man cry on stage at least once.

Now I’m not making promises about crying on stage here, but really, how often do we get to see someone fully expose their soul so publicly? It is like having an eye into the private world of another that we typically don’t get to see (or even know about) at all. In an age where personal expressions face a tremendous amount of judgment about what is considered appropriate or not, I ditch all those limitations and express just what is so… no hiding, no filters. It can be quite refreshing to witness what full self-expression looks like.

7. Poetry, mysticism, crooning, movement, music, community, sharing, love, potency.

Okay. I know this is more that one reason, but it is pretty challenging fitting all the reasons only into a list of ten. This show has some variety. It is interwoven using every reasonable tool to create an entertaining performance.

8. Artistic value.

Art, as creative expression. This is it. The real deal. Don’t come expecting a typical performance based on skill alone. Come to experience art first-hand in a night you will never forget. “This is art with a really big capital A. This is a little bit like sitting in the room whilst Vincent cuts off his ear.” - Unigon Plane (Benedict Roff-Marsh)

9. To support your community by attending a community supported event.

Underlying all of the personal stories and deep emotional processes that I will present is a major underlying theme about innate human interdependence and the importance of authentic community. This show was not created by only me. That would not even really be possible, especially given the circumstances of my daily life. It took a community to make it happen. It is because community believed in it so much that they felt compelled to support it. Now you can join and support the community that made it happen with your own presence.

10. To help out Cedar.

I have put tremendous effort into making this show happen in the hopes that it will improve my life situation. Your attendance is instrumental in helping me to reach the new heights to which I am aspiring. By showing your support and attending, you really offer me both the encouragement as well as the momentum I will need to be successful in his effort. Don’t miss this perfect chance to make a difference for me.
