Cognitive Dissonance

The unraveling had led to a deep state of denial and projection of blame for what had manifested into the world. How did we get here and where could we go next?

It appeared that the unraveling had been pretty effective. The systemic corruption that have controlled society, resources, and even the hearts and minds of people had become quite apparent. And when the symbols of corruption were revealed, the people did not understand exactly what they were witnessing, or their powerful role in what had come about.

Cognitive dissonance set in, as the myths that the people had clung to about how the governance and capitalism were there to serve the people had been shattered. Votes didn't matter, protesting didn't matter, boycotts were ineffective, justice was scarce, and corruption dominated the entire society. It was a major shift for the psyche of most to grasp.

One of the primary reactions to the discomfort of the dissonance was to project and begin assigning blame for why their participation had not produced the desired outcomes. Their candidate had not been elected, despite his popularity. He hand't even won the primaries, and had lost to a corrupted woman that few could support with a good heart. And when she became the only possible choice, they had placed their bets on her (or not) and the voices of the people were not heard again. Eventually they were left with a new President, a shadow of everything that was within the people of America that they had yet to resolve within themselves.

He was a wealthy, white man. A chauvinistic and potentially racist businessman that represented everything most Americans hated. Because he was wealthy, he represented the shadow of poverty. Because he was male, he symbolized the shadow of gender equanimity. Because he was white, he represented the shadow of prejudice within minority groups of all kinds. Few would understand that what they had manifested as their President, was their own shadow.

Rather than embrace the aspects that he symbolized within themselves and resolve them, they became more divisive, lashing out at anyone and everyone who symbolized their own shadow aspects. Rather than unifying with others to change the dynamics for the better, they dug into limited belief structures and asserted their own righteousness as they wildly cast blame and judgment on everyone but themselves.

Yet they were simultaneously all participants in a systemically corrupted system that they had inherited. It was their very dependency on the status quo that had allowed them to be fooled into thinking that their voted actually counted. It was their own addiction to money that had enticed them into lives of slavery serving an unjust system. It was their own apathy that had allowed their nation to become divided and stolen away by a few elite tyrants.

And now that the truth had been partially revealed, and there was an opportunity to abandon the ways of society that had destroyed individual power, the family unit, and community in general, they retreated into false pride. There was a rash of noise and complaints, as if by crying the baby would get its candy back from one who steals candy from a baby, but to know avail. Their very participation in the noise again served as distraction to the fact that they actually had the potential of power the entire time.

So rather than focus on how they could better themselves, or what might become possible by at least taking a good deep look, they just kept putting all their energy into serving a master who would never serve them. Rather than rekindling community and family, they took to the streets and the airwaves battling against a society that they were disempowered to affect in any way.

Even the most spiritual and artistic types seemed to get lost in the hysteria. Some responded to the cognitive dissonance with different reactions. Many dug their heels into proverbs and concepts of positivity that might keep them out of the mire of darkness that lived within. They would wear colorful clothing and speak in overly positive language, attempting to appear that they were righteous and not to blame for the results. Even those trained in doing deep healing work began totally avoiding the shadows within.

And me, how could I influence a society gone so insane? I reflected on this challenge for some time. No matter what words I spoke to encourage people to have the courage to face and embrace the internal shadows, my words had no affect. People after all, do not learn from being told, they learn by emulating idols. If I was to be able to teach anyone about going into the darkness and facing the shadows, I would need to demonstrate it myself.

I knew it would not be easy, for I have done this deep healing work numerous times, and that it would require great courage to do so in public. Absent any other clear solutions, and committed to making a positive impact for a humanity that I love, I set out to Illuminate Shadows.
